Studying finance and economics with a Spanish minor, Knowles values when instructors share their knowledge directly rather than relying heavily on technology.
She emphasizes the importance of instructors developing their own lectures and lesson plans, rather than using generic materials provided by textbooks. When teachers read from slides prepared by the textbook, classes become less engaging and less effective in Knowles’ opinion.
Knowles advocates for a “less is more” approach when it comes to classroom technology, emphasizing the integration of one or two high-quality platforms over multiple random tools. She believes that a streamlined approach leads to better learning outcomes.
Similarly, Pelletier highlights the significance of a high-quality user experience in learning technologies. Poor interfaces, clunky integrations, and insufficient connectivity can create barriers in the classroom and with online tools, ultimately distracting students from their learning.
Students Value Choice and Expect It from Their Institutions
Research from EDUCAUSE supports the idea that choice is a key factor in student satisfaction. The “2023 Students and Technology Report: Flexibility, Choice and Equity in the Student Experience” highlights the importance of allowing students to choose how they engage with course materials.
According to Senior Director of Research and Insights Mark McCormack, students in hybrid courses are happiest when given the option to participate in person or remotely for different activities. This flexibility in engagement modes aligns with the “ethics of choice,” where students advocate for autonomy in their learning.
McCormack also notes the positive impact of choice on student satisfaction among those with learning disabilities. When given the option to engage online or in person for various activities, satisfaction levels significantly increase. This underscores the value of providing choice and flexibility in learning environments.
