This may sound like something out of a science fiction novel, but it’s actually the new reality of AI in the training industry.

AI has been making waves across industries, from Silicon Valley to Wall Street, but not always for the right reasons. Articles like “Apple Card algorithm sparks gender bias allegations against Goldman Sachs” and “New York Regulator Probes UnitedHealth Algorithm for Racial Bias” are shaking up the tech world, raising concerns about the ethical implications of AI implementation.

But where does AI in the training industry stand in all of this? As AI continues to integrate into every aspect of our lives, from predictive weather apps to social media algorithms, the field of Learning and Development finds itself at a crucial juncture. The promise of personalized learning experiences clashes with worries about privacy, bias, and the essence of human learning. Are we on the cusp of an educational revolution, or are we inadvertently embedding today’s biases into tomorrow’s learners?

One of the primary challenges: bias

AI systems are only as impartial as the data they’re trained on and the individuals who design them. Let’s delve into the case of HSBC’s foray into AI-powered VR training. In 2019, they partnered with Talespin to develop a VR program for soft skills training, encountering hurdles when deploying it globally. The AI, primarily trained on Western expression datasets, consistently misinterpreted common nonverbal cues:

  • In Hong Kong, the AI struggled with subtle Chinese communication styles, misinterpreting politeness as shyness.
    • The concept of “saving face” was misread as indecisiveness, leading to misunderstandings in communication.
    • Silence for contemplation was mistaken for disengagement, when it’s actually a sign of thoughtful consideration in Chinese culture.
  • In the Middle East, cultural gestures and greetings were overlooked, leading to misunderstandings due to different social norms.
    • Not recognizing the significance of right-hand usage in greetings led to unintentional breaches of etiquette.
    • The AI flagged closer physical proximity as inappropriate, failing to account for cultural differences in business interactions.
  • In the UK, British understatement posed a challenge as the AI struggled to interpret the subtly of British communication styles.
    • Phrases such as “That’s not bad” were misinterpreted, leading to inaccurate assessments of feedback.
    • British politeness often came across as lack of confidence, causing misunderstandings in feedback.

These discrepancies led to VR scores not aligning with real-world performance. While this could have been a setback, HSBC took proactive steps to address the issues. They enlisted cultural experts, integrated cultural settings into the VR program, and provided additional training on cross-cultural communication. By human intervention and cultural awareness, they turned challenges into valuable insights for global business.

Privacy: a paramount concern in AI-driven training systems

The L.A. Times reported that “L.A. is suing IBM for illegally gathering and selling user data through its Weather Channel app.” This case underscores the potential misuse of personal data by AI systems. In the training industry, AI systems collect vast amounts of data on learners’ behavior, preferences, and performance. While this data can enhance learning outcomes, it also poses significant privacy risks if mishandled.

To address privacy concerns:

  • Implement stringent data protection measures to safeguard learners’ privacy and be transparent about data collection and usage.
  • Empower learners with control over their data, including access, correction, and deletion rights.
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with data protection regulations and best practices.

Transparency: shedding light on AI decision-making

Many AI algorithms, particularly those using deep learning, are often perceived as “black boxes,” making it challenging to comprehend how they arrive at decisions. This lack of transparency can present challenges in a training context. Educators and learners should be able to grasp the rationale behind AI-recommended learning paths and assessments of student capabilities.

To enhance transparency:

  • Develop interpretable models that offer clear explanations for AI decisions.
  • Provide detailed documentation on how AI systems operate and make decisions
  • Conduct regular reviews and audits of AI systems to ensure proper functioning and identify potential issues.

Further steps to enhance AI in training:

  • Ensure diverse AI development teams to bring a range of perspectives, potentially reducing bias in AI systems.
  • Rigorously test AI systems for bias before deploying them in educational settings, involving varied data sets and stakeholders in the testing process.
  • Establish ongoing monitoring and evaluation of AI systems to address emerging biases or issues.

By addressing these concerns, we can harness the power of AI to improve training outcomes while safeguarding learners’ rights and promoting equality. As educators, technologists, and lifelong learners, it is our collective responsibility to shape an AI-driven future that enhances human intelligence.
