In the autumn of 1970, an inquisitive ten-year-old named Joel Linton reached out to Charles Schulz, the mastermind behind the beloved Peanuts comic strip, with a question that transcends time: “What do you think makes a good citizen?” Schulz, with his characteristic wisdom and brevity, sent an impactful response to the young boy, which continues to resonate today: read the letter here.

Dear Joel:

Defining what makes a good citizen seems to be more challenging these days than ever before. Ultimately, all of us are tasked with following our own conscience and maintaining faith in our democracy. Ironically, those who vocally champion a return to so-called “American Virtues” often lack this very faith in our country. Our true strength is evident in how we protect even the smallest minorities.

Sincerely yours,

Charles M. Schulz

When this enlightening letter re-emerged in 2019, Schulz’s widow observed, “Charles created comic strips that remain relevant to today’s audience.” Indeed, this message is equally essential in 2024.
