As educational environments become increasingly multilingual, the challenge for educators is to make learning accessible and inclusive for all students, regardless of their English proficiency. Emergent bilingual (EB) students currently represent 10.6 percent of the U.S. public school population, a figure that has grown to over 5.3 million students nationwide. Language barriers can deeply affect these students’ academic engagement and social interaction.
Traditional resources, such as peer translation and bilingual aides, often fall short in fast-paced classroom settings. Fortunately, AI-powered translation tools are emerging as a powerful solution, providing real-time language support that bridges communication gaps and cultivates inclusivity. But how do these innovations impact everyday classroom dynamics?
To explore this, we engaged with three insiders from Olney Independent School District (OISD) in Texas: Alyssa Betts, district emergent bilingual coordinator; Veronica Fobbs, seventh-grade science teacher; and Elianis T., an EB student. Their experiences with the Timekettle X1 AI Interpreter Hub reveal the transformative potential of AI in education.
