Nikita Dutt, a second-year student at the University of California, Davis, unexpectedly found her calling while in college. Through the California Volunteers College Corps program, she became a tutor for elementary students in Los Angeles and San Francisco, earning $700 a month by dedicating at least 20 hours per two weeks to tutoring.

Despite the challenges of keeping young students engaged, Dutt found profound fulfillment in helping a sixth grader with a learning disability overcome a hurdle in multiplication. This success ignited Dutt’s passion for education and tutoring, motivating her to continue making a difference in students’ lives.

Reflecting a nationwide trend, college students like Dutt are increasingly stepping up as high-dose tutors to support struggling schools. With the end of federal funding for pandemic relief tutoring programs looming, schools are turning to creative solutions to sustain these vital initiatives.

A New Era of Tutoring

As schools seek alternative funding sources to maintain tutoring programs, college students offer a valuable resource. Their involvement not only expands the pool of affordable tutors but also enhances the quality of educational support provided to K-12 students.

Recognizing the need for well-trained tutors, programs like the high-dose tutoring training initiative aim to elevate the standard of tutoring services in schools. By equipping tutors with essential skills and knowledge, these programs empower individuals to make a meaningful impact on student learning outcomes.

The shift towards high-dose tutoring as a key educational strategy post-pandemic underscores the importance of sustained investment in student support services. While federal funds may be dwindling, collaborative efforts between schools, universities, and community organizations can help bridge the gap and ensure continued access to quality tutoring.

With the rise of virtual tutoring platforms and innovative training resources, the future of education holds promise for a more inclusive and effective tutoring landscape. By harnessing the potential of college student-tutors, schools can not only address immediate academic needs but also foster mentorship and career exploration opportunities for students and tutors alike.

Dutt’s transformative experience as a tutor highlights the profound impact of personalized educational support. Embracing her newfound passion for teaching and tutoring, she exemplifies the positive ripple effects of investing in student success and empowerment.
