IT/technology company Open Table & KAYAK’s Managing Essentials training program aims to equip managers with the necessary tools and frameworks to effectively lead their teams. This program helps employees understand the expectations for career progression and identify areas for personal growth.
Since its launch in the first quarter of 2022, 19 percent of the workforce has completed this training program.
Program Details
The Managing Essentials program is structured as a cohort-style, blended learning initiative designed to align with Open Table & KAYAK’s Leadership Principles. These principles—Owns & Empowers, Drives Results & Vision, Champions & Collaborates, and Inclusive & Transparent—guide managers on the expectations of leadership in their roles.
The curriculum of Managing Essentials links all concepts to one of the four principles, showing how applying the program content helps managers meet the leadership expectations set by senior management.
Participants engage in six bi-weekly modules, including self-paced eLearning and live workshops covering topics such as transitioning into management, giving feedback, and managing employee engagement.
The program involves group work, post-work assignments, and a 360-degree survey conducted before and after program completion. Cohorts are offered twice a year, with open enrollment and reserved seats for newly promoted managers.
After each workshop, managers receive a guide to help debrief content with their reports and encourage application of learned concepts.
During performance reviews, managers revisit participants’ development, especially their involvement in the Managing Essentials program, to assess behavioral changes and their impact on team performance.
Results
Managers completing Managing Essentials have shown a notable 10 percent improvement in Engagement Survey scores, compared to the company’s standard of less than 1 percent. This improvement reflects increased engagement reported by their direct reports.
Additionally, the company has witnessed a rise in scores for the question regarding access to learning and development needed for job performance, indicating a positive impact on employee satisfaction and effectiveness.
