Are you involved in creating a stage play, film, or television series set in ancient Rome? If so, the authenticity of the footwear, particularly the sandals, plays a significant role in capturing the essence of that era. However, historical research has uncovered interesting details that may change the way we view ancient Roman fashion. For instance, did you know that some ancient Romans wore their sandals with socks, a style that might seem unconventional in today’s context? Additionally, a recent discovery sheds light on the soles of these sandals.

Discovered near the Bavarian city of Oberstimm, an ancient Roman sandal, though mostly decayed, provides insights into the military fashion trends that influenced the local population. These sandals, known as “caligae,” had tough soles with hobnails that offered traction for the marching troops, showcasing a fascinating blend of style and functionality.

This particular caliga, dating back to between 60 and 130 AD, showcases a pivotal shift in Roman military footwear, from sandals to boots. Notably, the influence of Roman soldiers’ footwear extended beyond the army, impacting the civilian fashion in Bavaria during that period.

The interplay between standard military gear and popular fashion in ancient Rome is a revelation. The Roman army served as not just a military force but also a cultural influencer. The hobnails in Roman military sandals not only offered traction but also conveyed a sense of sophistication. The extent of the reach of this footwear throughout the Roman Empire is a fascinating subject for further exploration, providing costume designers with valuable inspiration.
