Methodology
We crafted this list employing a data-driven approach similar to the one used for compiling the top computer science courses from leading universities.
Initially, we isolated the prominent global university rankings. Focusing on math, we examined their latest rankings of the top institutions for the study of math (or closely related subjects). The rankings we utilized are listed below:
Subsequently, we systematically analyzed each ranking by crawling and scraping the data.
After compiling the data, we utilized Jupyter with Python to process it. We consolidated the three rankings into a single ranking by averaging the position of each university in every ranking. Then, we filtered out universities that did not offer online courses and refined the list to the top 60 institutions.
For the 2024 update, we followed the same procedure and utilized the same sources and methodology to identify the top 60 universities offering online math courses.

As illustrated in the image above, the top three institutions for math education are:
- MIT
- Cambridge
- Princeton
Finally, we leveraged the vast Class Central database, comprising 250K online courses, to locate all math courses offered by the universities in the ranking.
The culmination is an extensive list of over 220 online courses provided by the top 60 universities in the world for studying math in 2024.
While analyzing the data, an intriguing discovery was made: 59 out of the top 60 universities offer online courses, a remarkable statistic demonstrating the prolific nature of online course offerings from esteemed institutions.
