Have you ever heard of a “cat piano”? Perhaps you envision a whimsical furry creature with piano keys for teeth or a piano with caged cats that shriek when keys are pressed. Surprisingly, the idea of a cat piano was actually considered as a form of treatment by 18th-century German physician Johann Christian Reil to shake mental patients out of a fixed state into conscious awareness.

While this experiment may sound bizarre and cruel, it is likely that it never actually took place. The concept of the cat piano, or Katzenklavier, was rumored to have been invented by German scholar Athanasius Kircher in the 17th century. Kircher, known as “the last Renaissance man,” made significant contributions to various fields of study, despite some of his ideas being considered outlandish or amusing in retrospect.

Despite the questionable nature of the cat piano, cats have been depicted as musical instruments in various stories throughout history. While the idea of using cats in such a manner may seem cruel to us now, it is worth considering how our interactions with animals have evolved over time.

From the perspective of the cats, the Katzenklavier would undoubtedly be viewed as a sinister torture device, highlighting the complexities of human-animal relationships and historical attitudes towards animals as entertainers.
