Note: With the recent passing of James Earl Jones at age 93, we’re revisiting a post from our archives that features Jones reading two iconic American poets, Edgar Allan Poe and Walt Whitman. These readings were initially shared on our site in 2014.
Despite the flaws in the original Star Wars trilogy, James Earl Jones’ voice always stood out. His deep baritone added a layer of gravitas to the films, making even the most absurd scenes feel weighty. Now, picture the impact of Jones reading from the already weighty works of Edgar Allan Poe and Walt Whitman. Listening to him recite Poe’s “The Raven” is chilling, capturing the eerie obsession that defines this poem.
Jones’ reading of selections from Whitman’s “Song of Myself” is equally captivating. His Shakespearean background shines through, perfectly complementing Whitman’s expansive verses. Few readers possess the vocal depth to convey Whitman’s universal truths like Jones does. This recording from 1973 showcases Jones’ powerful delivery of Whitman’s profound sentiments.
