When it comes to AI education, it’s not just about teaching students the technical aspects. AI is a complex field with societal, moral, ethical, and legal implications that must be part of a robust education. Some lessons can only be learned through real-world experiences.

Here are six strategies that higher education can use to prepare students for a future with AI:

  • 3. Raise Bias Awareness

1. Incorporate AI into Existing Degree Programs

Instead of creating specific AI engineering degrees, existing degree programs can be enhanced to include AI components. The fundamentals of AI programs are similar to other technical programs, focusing on subjects like computer engineering, coding, mathematics, and data analysis. By incorporating AI examples and assignments into existing programs, colleges can attract students interested in AI.

2. Don’t Ignore AI’s Limitations

While AI has incredible potential, it also has limitations that can be overlooked. Students need to understand that AI operates based on patterns in data and may struggle with human unpredictability. By being aware of these limitations, students can maximize the benefits of AI technology.

3. Raise Bias Awareness

AI tools are trained by humans and can be influenced by bias. Students should be educated about bias and how it can impact AI outcomes. Whether intentional or unintentional, bias can affect data analysis and predictions. By raising awareness about bias, students can make informed decisions when working with AI technology.
