Cloud computing has revolutionized the way organizations operate, but the journey to the cloud is not always smooth sailing. According to Roger Haney, CDW’s chief architect for software-defined infrastructure, many organizations struggle with taking their on-premises habits and simply shifting them to the cloud. The key to success lies in moving from lift-and-shift to lift-and-improve activities, and ultimately transitioning to a cloud-native mindset.
The latest research report also sheds light on the challenges faced in cloud management, such as the lack of cloud governance and the shortage of skilled cloud professionals. Visibility into cloud spending is also a major concern, with only 47% of respondents feeling confident in their ability to track cloud costs effectively.
Security is another critical aspect of cloud adoption, with many organizations citing concerns and even resorting to cloud repatriation due to security reasons. However, the report reveals that improved security is actually a significant benefit of public cloud investment for nearly half of respondents, showcasing a shift in perception around cloud security capabilities.
As Roger Haney puts it, cloud security operates on a whitelist principle, where organizations define what is allowed through rather than what is denied. Understanding this unique approach is key to leveraging the full potential of cloud security and reaping its benefits.
