Nurturing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at MSUFCU

In 2022, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union’s (MSUFCU) Learning and Development (L&D) team introduced a mandatory course entitled ‘Cultivate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’. The course content was developed collaboratively with the HR and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) departments and drew inspiration from various educational institutions such as the University of Michigan Program on Intergroup Affairs and Bobbi Harro’s Cycle of Socialization.

Program Overview

The course covers a range of topics including community guidelines for engaging in DEIB discussions, the Cycle of Socialization, social identities, microaggressions, micro-interventions, and the internally created ‘How to Be a Good Ally Guide’. It consists of a two-hour instructor-led session (virtual or in-person) supplemented by one hour of pre-work and post-work activities that encourage self-reflection and goal-setting for becoming better allies.

Moreover, MSUFCU launched the Ask Me Anything (AMA) Series in 2022, inspired by online platforms like Reddit. This storytelling initiative allowed employees to participate in social learning and gain exposure to diverse perspectives. The series featured a variety of topics with employees sharing personal stories, fostering empathy and understanding among participants.

  • Navigating Society with Achondroplasia
  • The Journey of Advocating for Your Child’s Needs
  • Widowed at a Young Age

Additionally, MSUFCU introduced Manager/Lead/Trainer sessions to enhance the training experience and promote learning transfer. Employees are encouraged to incorporate Ally Action Steps into their daily work to support diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization.

Achievements

Results from the Gallup Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging survey indicated positive shifts in employee attitudes and behaviors. Ratings for appreciating diversity and inclusive leadership saw improvements, showcasing the impact of the training initiatives. The organization’s commitment to fostering a fair and inclusive environment was recognized and appreciated by employees.
