Discovering a Passion for Learning and Development
My journey into learning and development began almost 20 years ago when I was working as a Customer Service Representative in a call center. An opportunity arose for me to assist as a subject matter expert in a training class, and I discovered a natural talent for explaining complex concepts in a simple way. This led to my transition into a role as an associate trainer, and since then, I have never looked back.
Driving Employee Development Through Innovative Initiatives
One of the key initiatives I have implemented as a learning leader is our “pathways” program. This program guides employees from new hire training to management positions by focusing on specific skills needed at each level of their career. For example, agents at the six-month mark undergo training on resource utilization to advance to a higher skill level.
Empowering Growth Through Impactful Learning Programs
Over the past decade, I have introduced various programs in my organization, but the most impactful change has been the integration of a skills-based curriculum across all programs. This approach ensures that employees learn within the context of their work, leading to real-world application of skills and enhanced performance.
Addressing Misconceptions About Learning and Development
One common misconception about L&D is that training is a quick fix for all issues. To combat this, we emphasize the importance of structured processes and performance metrics in our training programs. We also encourage open communication with business partners to showcase the effort and expertise required in designing effective training content.
Embracing the Future of Workplace Learning
The virtual training landscape excites me as it offers global collaboration and learning opportunities. I am preparing my organization to adapt by embracing new technologies and fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
Qualities of a Successful L&D Leader
Effective L&D leaders come in various forms, and my introverted and observant nature has been beneficial in my career. By focusing on building relationships, gaining trust, and asking questions, I have cultivated a strong leadership style within my team.
Game-Changing Advice for Younger Self
If I could mentor my younger self, I would emphasize the importance of bravery, curiosity, and sharing ideas. It’s essential to push boundaries, ask questions, and have the courage to pursue new opportunities.
Challenges Facing L&D Professionals
Artificial intelligence and machine learning pose a significant challenge for L&D professionals, as there is a misconception that these technologies can replace human expertise. While I recognize their value, I strive to balance innovation with the human touch in our training programs.
Innovative Learning Technologies
We recently partnered with Zenarate to incorporate simulated scenarios into our training programs, enabling learners to practice in a safe environment. This technology has enhanced the quality of our training outcomes and performance levels.
