Employee engagement and career development are crucial aspects of any organization’s success. At our company, recent surveys showed that only 54 percent of our workforce felt they had significant growth opportunities. In response, our Organization Effectiveness team launched an innovative mentoring program to address this gap. The goal was to provide focused career development, increase diversity, grow skills, and encourage cross-functional collaboration. In this blog, we will delve into the highlights and outcomes of this impactful initiative.

Designing an Effective Mentoring Program
We set specific success criteria for the mentoring program:
- Minimum of 25 active mentor/mentee pairings that are mutually beneficial.
- Achieve a favorability score of 70 percent or higher.
Exceeding our expectations, we achieved 27 beneficial pairings and received 100 percent favorability scores.
Our key strategy was the personalized matching process, where we matched mentees with mentors based on their development needs and strengths. We interviewed managers of mentees to identify key areas of development and mentors filled out profiles showcasing their expertise.
We recommended two or three mentors for each mentee, who then chose the best match based on compatibility. This ensured that mentoring relationships were aligned with the interests and needs of both parties, promoting inclusivity.
Pairings were supported with an orientation session, resources like LinkedIn Learning courses, a Teams group, relationship development plans, goal-setting templates, discussion topics, and additional curated resources to enhance the mentoring experience.

The program spanned six, nine, or 12 months, with regular meetings between mentees and mentors to discuss goals, challenges, and progress. We encouraged bi-monthly meetings and provided flexibility for in-person or online interactions.
Creating an Engaging Mentoring Experience
Quarterly mentee and mentor socials were a significant hit among participants, fostering community and facilitating knowledge sharing. Events like the “Ask Me Anything” session on building executive presence with senior leaders were particularly beneficial for mentees.
Celebrating Success
At the program’s conclusion, mentees and mentors shared their learnings and experiences. Testimonials highlighted the invaluable mentorship provided and the impact on personal and professional growth.

Being a mentor was a rewarding experience, as mentors shared their expertise and mentees gained valuable insights. The program’s success was evident in the continued connections post-program and its expansion to other facilities.

Impressive Outcomes
The mentoring program’s success led to continued mentor-mentee relationships and inspired similar initiatives in other organizations. It has been a catalyst for personal and professional growth, emphasizing the importance of investing in talent for long-term success.
