Are you interested in exploring Japan’s rich history and cultural influences? If so, then a journey to Japan today will offer you a unique opportunity to delve into the country’s past through its language and traditions. From pan (bread) to tabako (cigarettes) and tempura (deep-fried seafood or vegetables), the Portuguese influence on Japanese vocabulary and cuisine is unmistakable.

The connection between Japan and Portugal dates back to 1543 when Portuguese sailors first set foot on Japanese shores. The encounter between these two distant lands is vividly captured in a Voices of the Past compilation video, shedding light on how sixteenth-century Japanese historians portrayed the arrival of these foreign visitors.

Initially perceived as strange and unfamiliar creatures, the Portuguese missionaries, known as bateren (padres), played a significant role in introducing Western concepts, technologies, and even dessert culture to Japan. Their impact extended beyond religion, as they brought innovations such as firearms that influenced the course of Japanese history.

Despite their efforts to spread Christianity, the bateren faced resistance from traditional Japanese rulers who eventually cracked down on foreign influences, leading to a decisive showdown between Christianity and Buddhism. The video recounts this historic confrontation, highlighting the challenges faced by the missionaries and the eventual closure of Japan to outside influence for centuries.
