Welcome to the Age of Collaborative Learning

As inherently social beings, humans have always thrived within communities. Since ancient times, we’ve relied on these networks—be it families, villages, or larger organizations—for connection and survival. Much like other species, we find strength in numbers, whether through familial bonds or civic structures.

Given this intrinsic need for connection, it’s only natural that learning would follow suit. Peer learning, deeply embedded in social learning theory, has gained momentum as a crucial component of corporate learning and development worldwide.

Creating an environment that fosters peer learning has become incredibly simple. In our tech-driven world, connectivity is at an all-time high. From frontline workers to top executives, technology permeates every job role. In fact, the average person now spends around six and a half hours online daily.

Recent studies highlight the rising trend of peer learning across numerous organizations. This growth is logical, considering how technology facilitates learning alongside colleagues from virtually anywhere.

Embracing peer learning brings numerous benefits, such as enhancing learner confidence, fostering a sense of personal and group accountability, and boosting employee involvement. It also cultivates vital competencies, including communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork, while enhancing metacognitive abilities.

Moreover, peer learning contributes to creating an atmosphere of psychological safety. Leaders should promote open and accepting environments where individuals can share ideas, discuss experiences, raise questions, and even acknowledge mistakes without fear of negative repercussions.

As per Whatfix, social and peer learning play an essential role in skill enhancement. With an increasing focus on skill-based learning approaches, businesses would do well to explore how to best utilize peer learning to foster a psychologically safe and productive atmosphere where employees motivate each other and acquire new skill sets.

I’m excited to announce the upcoming Chief Learning Officer Symposium. This three-day event will bring together L&D leaders to learn from one another and celebrate achievements in corporate learning.

The CLO Symposium epitomizes the essence of peer learning, featuring motivational speeches, interactive workshops, and insightful discussions aimed at igniting curiosity, sparking cooperation, and building strong industry partnerships.

Conferences create the ideal landscape for peer learning. They introduce participants to fresh ideas and strategies, encourage meaningful dialogue, offer instant feedback, and build connections over shared experiences and interests.

This year’s CLO Symposium will take place from October 21 to 23 in Tucson, Arizona. Since I joined BetterWork Media Group in 2019, I’ve had the honor of helping organize five of these impactful events. Each year broadens my understanding of this vibrant industry, and I am grateful to belong to a community that prioritizes the power of learning.

My sixth CLO Symposium also marks the 20th anniversary of the event. Each gathering seems to grow richer with invaluable insights and experiences. It’s inspiring to hear what participants have achieved since our last meeting.

Whether you’re a long-time friend or a new acquaintance, I am eager to learn alongside you in Tucson.
