In June 2023, the International Organization for Standardization introduced a groundbreaking standard for learning and development metrics to revolutionize L&D measurement practices and propel the profession forward.

ISO/TS 30437:2023: Human Resource Management—Learning and Development Metrics marks a significant milestone in our industry by providing a much-needed framework for measurement and reporting within the field.

Significance of the Standard

Over the years, learning and development professionals have grappled with questions surrounding what, how, and why to measure certain metrics. With a lack of consensus on terminology and calculations, the standard aims to offer a common language and agreed-upon definitions to streamline measurement processes.

While other professions like accounting have well-established frameworks and terminology, the L&D field has been lacking in this aspect. The introduction of the ISO standard seeks to bridge this gap and foster greater professionalism and standardization within the industry.

Exploring the Standard

Developed by a team of global ISO industry experts, the standard provides a comprehensive guide to measurement and reporting, offering 19 metrics for smaller organizations and 52 metrics for larger organizations. It emphasizes the importance of user-oriented metrics and recommends specific measures for different stakeholders.

The framework categorizes users into five broad categories, ranging from senior leaders to individual learners, and outlines four main reasons for measuring metrics. Additionally, the standard presents three categories of metrics: efficiency, effectiveness, and outcome, with practical examples and calculations provided for each.

With a focus on usability, the standard advocates for the use of scorecards, dashboards, program evaluation reports, and management reports to present data in a clear and accessible manner.

Driving Forward

The ISO standard paves the way for a more organized and mature L&D profession, setting the stage for increased impact and strategic partnerships. By embracing the framework and adopting standardized practices, professionals can elevate their measurement and reporting strategies to a new level of sophistication.

For those looking to enhance their L&D practices, the ISO standard offers a valuable resource for improving measurement and reporting processes. Consider purchasing a copy of the standard to unlock its full potential and propel your L&D group towards greater success.
