Higher education leaders are now recognizing the potential of generative artificial intelligence to enhance the academic experience for students and faculty. This marks a significant shift from the initial skepticism surrounding the role of AI in higher education.
According to Brian Johnsrud, head of thought leadership and advocacy for education at Adobe, “This is an exciting time, but one characterized by rapid change.”
A recent survey conducted by EDUCAUSE revealed that most campuses have implemented AI guidelines or policies in the past year. Only 11% of respondents reported that nobody at their institution is working on AI-related strategy.
“The initial focus of AI usage in higher education was on text-to-text generative AI for tasks like essays, exams, and coding, leading to concerns about cheating and plagiarism,” Johnsrud explains. “Now, we are seeing more innovative applications that aim to expand career opportunities for students. The integration of AI into everyday work practices is accelerating, with AI becoming a ubiquitous tool in various industries.”
